BUYER’s GUIDE
RETIREMENT AND VISAS

It’s possible for foreigners over the age of 50 to apply for a so-called “Retirement Visa”. This is a relatively simple procedure. To start your Thai retirement plans, you will first need a non-immigrant visa. Ideally, it should be acquired prior to your arrival in Thailand. This will initially give you permission to stay for 90 days (single entry).

For an applicant, proof of (1) a sum of 800,000 baht in a Thai bank or (2) an income of not less than 65,000 baht per month must be presented. Alternatively it could be a combination of the two, as long as the total adds up to 800,000 baht over the course of one year.

Upon its approval you must pick up the retirement visa at the Immigration office. You must appear in person with your passport and sign the visa paperwork in the presence of the Immigration staff. The Immigrant staff will stamp the passport at the time of approval.

The retirement once approved allows you to stay in Thailand for one year. You are not allowed to undertake employment while on this type of visa. Moreover you must report to Immigration every 90 days to verify your current address.

Please contact your nearest Thai embassy for more information about required documentation.
